Event: “Field Notes: 8th Annual LLILAS Benson Student Photography Exhibit.”

Background: Each fall, LLILAS Benson invites graduate and undergraduate students from all departments and disciplines to submit photographs to the Field Notes student photography exhibition. Through these images, student photographers document moments from their summer research on Latin America or US Latina/o communities. On view through January 10, 2018.
The photos portray a wide range of experiences, viewpoints, and settings. In some cases, the subject matter relates directly to the research topic. In others, the student was engaged in another activity, the image a serendipitous result. Scenes of natural beauty are sometimes juxtaposed with scenes of environmental degradation. The work is often intimate, including portraits of the young and the elderly. Subject matter in the photographs ranges from city streets, subways, and architecture to food, social protest, street art, children at play, and more. The student photographers capture scenes of beauty and whimsy just as they do scenes of hardship.
Thirty photographs are selected each year for inclusion in the exhibition. Faculty and LLILAS Benson judges then vote to choose the two prize-winning images. Prize winners for fall 2017 are Nathalia Hernández Ochoa, for A Hot Day in Bluefields and Scott Squires for Cinturoncito.
