The foundation of the Marine Science Library’s collection came through the efforts of Dr. Elmer J. Lund, professor of Zoology and the first director of the Marine Science Institute, in the 1940s. Since that time, faculty and research scientists have donated materials to the library, some of which were either rare or unique. The library’s Special Collections room holds nearly 1,000 volumes, including a complete set of Frank Shipley Collins’ 51-volume Phycotheca Boreali-Americana (1895-1919), a collection of dried specimens of North American algae – which only a few libraries hold. Other rare items include reports and journals of scientific expeditions, local history, and editions of works by William Beebe and Charles Darwin.
